SOUTH SUDAN: NEW CLIMATE FUND COULD SUPPORT MORE THAN 200,000 CHILDREN HIT BY CLIMATE DISASTERS

Save the Children, with funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Global Partnership, launches new initiative to protect children from climate-related disasters.

10 NOV 2025SOUTH SUDAN

A major new climate initiative launched in South Sudan could provide life-saving support to more than 200,000 children who are disproportionately affected by climate-related disasters.

Children on the Front Lines of Climate Change

South Sudan is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. Recurring floods, droughts, and conflicts have displaced millions of people, with children bearing the heaviest burden. This new initiative aims to build resilience and protect the most vulnerable.

About the Green Climate Fund

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the world's largest dedicated climate fund. Save the Children is proud to partner with GCF and the Global Partnership for Education to implement this groundbreaking program that puts children's needs at the center of climate adaptation.

What the Program Will Do

  • Build climate-resilient schools that can serve as emergency shelters
  • Train communities in early warning systems for floods and droughts
  • Provide agricultural support to help families adapt to changing weather patterns
  • Create child-friendly spaces in emergency shelters
  • Deliver climate education to help children understand and respond to environmental changes

Why Children Need Special Protection

Children are not just small adults when it comes to climate change. Their developing bodies and minds make them more vulnerable to malnutrition, disease, and psychological trauma caused by climate disasters. They also have the right to be heard and involved in decisions that affect their futures.

A Brighter Future

This initiative represents a significant step forward in protecting children from the effects of climate change. By investing in resilience and adaptation, we can help ensure that children in South Sudan and around the world can survive, learn, and thrive despite the challenges they face.
