SOUTH SUDAN: BATTLE OF CONFLICT AND CLIMATE COLLIDE OUT OF THE WORLD'S WORST HUMANITARIAN CRISIS
The latest IPC figures show that next April, between planting and harvesting, about 5 million people will face emergency levels of hunger - the highest number ever recorded.
South Sudan is facing the perfect storm. Conflict and climate change have combined to create what experts are calling the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. By next April, an estimated 5 million people will be facing emergency levels of hunger - the highest number ever recorded.
A Crisis Like No Other
The situation in South Sudan is unique in its severity and complexity. Years of conflict have displaced millions of people and destroyed infrastructure. Now, climate change is making things worse, with increasingly frequent floods and droughts disrupting agriculture and displacing communities.
Children Are Starving
The most devastating impact is on children. Malnutrition rates are soaring, with nearly 1.4 million children under five expected to suffer from acute malnutrition this year. Without urgent action, many of these children will die.
Our Response
Save the Children is working around the clock to reach families with life-saving assistance. Our teams are:
- Providing emergency food supplies to families in hard-to-reach areas
- Operating mobile health clinics to treat malnourished children
- Delivering clean water and sanitation to prevent disease outbreaks
- Creating safe spaces for children traumatized by conflict
- Supporting families with cash assistance to buy food
What Needs to Happen
We are calling on the international community to step up funding for humanitarian operations in South Sudan. Without urgent action, more children will starve and die. The window to prevent catastrophe is closing fast.
"I have nothing to feed my children. We eat once a day, if we're lucky."
– Mary, a mother in South Sudan
