UKRAINE: WINTER BRINGS NEW CHALLENGES FOR CHILDREN
As winter sets in, children in Ukraine face harsh conditions and ongoing displacement.
As temperatures drop below freezing across Ukraine, children face new dangers. With infrastructure damaged and energy supplies disrupted, millions of children are at risk from the cold this winter.
A Crisis That Continues
The war in Ukraine has been ongoing for nearly three years. Children have experienced displacement, loss, and trauma. Now, winter brings additional challenges:
- No heating due to damaged infrastructure
- Power outages affecting hospitals and schools
- Increased risk of respiratory diseases
- Snow and ice making roads dangerous
- Limited access to warm shelter
Children Displaced
More than 3.7 million people remain displaced within Ukraine, including many children. They live in temporary accommodation, with host families, or in collective centers that may not have adequate heating.
Our Winter Response
Save the Children is working to help families prepare for winter. We provide:
- Winter clothing and boots for children
- Heating appliances and fuel
- Warm blankets and bedding
- Cash assistance to help families pay for heating
- Psychosocial support for traumatized children
Education Under Attack
Ukrainian children continue to face disruptions to their education. Schools have been destroyed, and many children study online when electricity is available. Some have been forced to relocate to other countries.
